John Lithgow Transforms Into Dumbledore for HBO’s Harry Potter Series: First Look at the Iconic Wizard
Summary
John Lithgow debuts as Dumbledore in HBO’s Harry Potter series, bringing fresh magic to the iconic role. Set photos reveal his wizardly transformation as the show prepares to adapt all seven books.
John Lithgow officially became a part of the wizarding world as Albus Dumbledore in HBO's new Harry Potter TV show. Early photos of the Emmy-winning actor on set reveal him in full attire—wearing a flowing gray beard, half-moon spectacles, and dark wizard robes—filming on the beach in England. Lithgow's interpretation brings the iconic headmaster of Hogwarts where Richard Harris and Michael Gambon alternated playing the role.
The series, set to debut in 2027, will be an adaptation of every one of J.K. Rowling's seven novels and will consist of one season for each novel. Lithgow admitted the role was a daunting undertaking, declaring, "It's going to define me for the last chapter of my life." Although there was early outrage over casting an American in the traditionally British role, Lithgow pandered and put fans at ease regarding his Emmy-winning portrayal of Winston Churchill in The Crown.
The filming began in July 2025, and the rest of the cast is Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. Paapa Essiedu, Janet McTeer, and Nick Frost round out the cast as Snape, McGonagall, and Hagrid, respectively.
Audiences have already glimpsed scenes at famous locations like King's Cross Station, and excitement mounts as further characters are revealed. Lithgow's recasting as Dumbledore announces a magical new era for the franchise, blending nostalgia and fresh retelling.
