The neon-lit, retro-futuristic universe of 1980s crime drama is returning big-league to the big screen. Top-shelf director Joseph Kosinski, whose high-octane blockbusters have made him a household name, is officially at the reins of a brand-new Miami Vice film reboot. The new reboot is already making big waves with a big actor on board and a much-hyped release date.

Sources indicate that Michael B. Jordan, the most sought-after leading man in Hollywood, is deep in negotiations to act in the lead role of Detective Ricardo "Rico" Tubbs. Philip Michael Thomas had originally conceived of the character in the classic television show. The film is planned as a period piece, transporting viewers to Miami in the 80s during the middle of the decade to witness the era's classic blend of corruption and glamour, inspired most specifically by the pilot and first season of the television series.

The production has a solid creative team. The writing is in the hands of an able writing duo composed of Oscar-nominated Eric Warren Singer and Emmy-winning Dan Gilroy. Kosinski will also serve as a producer along with veteran producer Dylan Clark. Further, the production aims to employ the newest IMAX cameras, ensuring a visually stunning, immersive experience that does justice to the series' revolutionary design.

While Jordan's deal is pending, the scope of the project also suggests an event movie of huge proportions. Solid speculation also exists that another Kosinski collaborator, Glen Powell, will also be in the mix for Tubbs' sidekick, Detective James "Sonny" Crockett. Shooting will commence in early 2026 with a wide theatrical release set for August 6, 2027. The reboot is the second feature film attempt at the franchise and is now set to revive a cultural icon for a new global audience.
